- To maintain steel frames we suggest that you spray inside
the frame tubing FISH OIL, CAVITY WAX or a frame saver mixture from the
time of purchase. These metal preservants are available from automotive
parts shops for around $10 to $20 for a pressure pack can. This way you
will have a protective film on the inside of the tubing which helps
prevent any rust or corrosion internally. You need to spray inside the
tubes from the beginning not after corrosion has started because you
are only sealing in the corrosion. If you allow water to sit inside the
frame , not even fish oil will prevent corrosion.
- Be
aware that the frame top tube frame can hold moisture . Water can enter
the frame by riding in wet weather or washing and hosing the frame. We
recommend that you disassemble and check the frame periodically for
moisture, and reapply fish oil at this time. To remove water tip the
frame so it can drain out.
- If
you have a fall we suggest that you check or have your frame inspected
by a qualified person. Frame alignment can be affected and frame damage
may be evident from a fall or crash.
- If your frame is chrome
plated we strongly recommend the fish oil maintenance inside all the
tubes. To polish chrome we suggest baby powder on a soft cloth.
- Wash
you frame to remove sweat and or sports drinks from the paint surface
as these can help rust set in from the outside especially "Coca Cola"
which is acidic. Clean around the tight areas of the frame like cable
guides and derailleur mounts. This is where corrosion can easily start
in those hard to get to areas.
